Letter from donor supporting Marty Chavez

Jim Maddox, a donor, explains his support for Marty Chavez, candidate for US House in New Mexico

To the LGBTQ Community,

How many times have we supported a candidate throughout their campaign, only to see little or no results once they are elected? Before we put our money where our mouth is, we must know we are electing a Congressman who will deliver on the issue that matters most: equality for all. That’s why I’m supporting Marty Chavez and contributing to his campaign.

Marty is a three-time mayor of Albuquerque, and for the duration of his time in office, he always stood up for the LGBTQ community. He stuck his neck out for LGBTQ city workers years ago, before it was the political fad of the day to support the LGBTQ community. Marty Chavez doesn’t just support us - he is a pioneer for gay rights in New Mexico, and he set the standard for the Democratic Party on LGBT issues in New Mexico. He signed the first Hate Crimes law in New Mexico to include sexual orientation. He signed the first executive order banning discrimination based on sexual orientation. And he mandated domestic partner benefits for city employees. Some politicians talk about supporting equality: Marty gets it done.

That’s what I want for New Mexico, and that’s what I want for our country. When Marty is elected to the House of Representatives for the First Congressional District of New Mexico, it will mean we all have a Congressman to represent our interests and our fight for equality— nationwide. I want to elect a politician who has the strength and the character to stand up for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals as Marty has done throughout his career—not when it was convenient, or stylish—but when it made a difference to us, and to our entie community.

Marty Chavez has always been the first to support us. Now it’s time for us to stand up and support him. I hope you’ll join me.

Jim Maddox | Albuquerque, New Mexico
