AGAINST EQUALITY GOAL: HATE CRIMES

He is against the Hate Crimes bill.

John McCain Quotes on Equality: In April 2007, he said, he "believes that all victims of violent crime should have their cases treated with equal urgency under the law," but, he does "not support federal legislation to assert federal jurisdiction over crimes."

He is against federal legislation (the Uniting American Families Act) that would allow an American to immigrate his or her foreign same sex partner. 

INTERIM GOAL: CIVIL UNIONS AND DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS

He campaigned in his home state of Arizona to amend the state's constitution to forbid same sex marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships. Though he voted in Congress against creating a similar amendment to the US Consitution.

He has no public statements or voting record regarding rights for transexual, transvestite, or transgendered Americans.

John McCain Quotes on Equality: In an interview with the The New York Times on July 13, 2008, he stated:

"I think that we've proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don't believe in gay adoption."

He and his second wife, Cindy, have an adopted daughter.
